Rather watch? Here’s my video on this ↓
Hi, my Saltines. Today I’m coming to you with a word of caution, and honestly, it’s for everyone, not just seniors.
We all know not to let strangers in. But lately we’ve seen people who were invited in, like installers, cable techs and delivery drivers, steal or swindle. Most workers are honest. But if three people come and just one of them is shady, that’s all it takes.
The problem: you can’t watch three people at once
I recently had a new furnace put in. More than one person came, which is normal. But think about it: two are in the basement, one says “I need to run out to the truck,” and your front door is standing open. You can’t see what’s walking out of your living room or into somebody’s pocket.
People who are up to no good are in the business of distraction. One little question, one “Can you come look at this?”, and your attention is somewhere else.
What to do
- Don’t be home alone for it. Ask a friend, neighbor or family member to be there for the install or the repair. The more eyes, the better.
- Stay with them. If someone heads upstairs to use the bathroom or out to the car, your helper can keep an eye on the other rooms and the door.
- Put small valuables away before anyone arrives: purse, wallet, medications, keys, jewelry, mail with your account numbers.
- Book from companies you chose. Be wary of anyone who just shows up saying you need work done.
- Close the door behind them and check it’s locked after they leave.
Can’t find someone to be there? Ask if the company can come on a day when you have company. A good business will understand.
Stay safe out there. And if something doesn’t feel right, trust that feeling.
