Rather watch? Here’s my video on this ↓
Hi, my Saltines. This one has a deadline, so I need you to listen, whether you’re on Medicare or you look after someone who is.
A lot of Medicare Advantage plans have been cancelled or restructured, and notices are going out in the mail. Medicare’s Open Enrollment period ends on December 7, and that’s a lot closer than you think.
Step 1: Open your mail. Actually read it.
I know. It looks like the same annual renewal letter you get every year, so it goes on the pile. Not this year. Open it and look for two things:
- Is your plan being cancelled? If so, do not throw that letter away.
- Is your plan being changed? You might pay more, your prescriptions might not be covered anymore, or the doctors you see now might not be in the network next year.
Step 2: If you were cancelled, copy that letter
Make several copies of the cancellation notice. I call it your golden ticket. When a plan drops you, there are protections that can help you get onto a new plan, so you’ll want proof that you were cancelled. Include a copy when you apply for your new coverage.
Step 3: Pick your new plan early and get it in
Don’t wait until December 6. Choose your plan, send everything in (certified mail, so you know it arrived), and give yourself time so there’s no gap in your coverage.
If you’re switching from an Advantage plan to Original Medicare (Parts A and B), remember you’ll usually need to pick a prescription drug plan to go with it.
